I admit, I was feeling a little down and looking for some validation. Most of the responses were positive (and I did get some good dates out of those exchanges), but one guy wrote me a rant, criticizing every bit of it. I was stunned. A little hurt, but mostly stunned. I thought about Moxie’s usual advice of “delete, block and move on.” But I couldn’t resist responding. My response? One sentence. “Wow, you just took time out of your day to be deliberately mean to someone.” That was it. I’ve used variations of this whenever I’ve felt insulted. With the rest of the more or less well-meaning guys, I give the benefit of the doubt. I try to let go of my own first emotional reaction and when I respond, I take the attitude of being curious. Instead of responding with snark and uptight comebacks, try something like, “I’m curious as to why you would say that.” or “Why do you think that?” or just repeat back what they say and ask for clarification, “It seems like you’re saying I’ve lived a sheltered life, is that how I come across?” You’d be surprised at how often a comment that I might’ve taken as seriously insulting at first glance turns out to be nothing of the kind. And it may well be that your profile/online dating personality *is* being perceived a certain way, and it might be helpful to be aware of that. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
