I recommend Flight to Arras, by Antoine de St-Exupery (who wrote The Little Prince.) The book takes the form of St-Ex’s musings before, during, and after a reconnaissance flight during the disastrous campaign of 1940, a flight from which he had not expected to return.
Also Walter Miller’s great novel A Canticle for Leibowitz, which is categorized a science fiction but is really theological/philosophical fiction.
